The Word Nerd is the business name used by Milli Thornton to operate Fear of Writing and other writing adventures. 4. Why are your e-book pages shorter than other e-books?
We purposely use special margin settings to make our pages shorter plus a size 14 font, which allows an average of 21-22 lines of text per page. You can download our free e-book to get a feel for our page layout. See the next question to find out why we've formatted our e-books this way.

5. Why do you use special formatting in your e-books?
We aim to make our e-books as readable as humanly possible on the computer screen. We've provided clear directions within each e-book for how to get the best from our special layout. We've used point 14 settings (and only fonts chosen to give you the smoothest read) and have formatted our pages so you can READ WITHOUT SCROLLING. We do acknowledge that our e-books look a little strange when printed onto paper—but we feel e-books should first and foremost be easy to read on the screen. To request a PDF of the point 12, full-page format, email us at e-books @ fearofwriting.com and include the receipt from your e-book purchase. This version will be sent by email attachment, not via download. (Not available for the free e-book.)

6. What is Adobe Reader 7.0?
Adobe Reader is a great product from Adobe combining the ability to view your regular PDF documents (just like in Acrobat) with the ability to read e-books. You can use Adobe Reader for either function. We chose this reader for our e-books because it's free, easy to use, and accessible to everybody on the Internet. You can view our e-books in Acrobat—but you won't get the same advantages and your new e-book might not look as crisp. Page layout will also be less customized.

7. How do I download Adobe Reader 7.0?
We've provided easy, printable instructions to go with our download link. When you're ready, click on any Adobe Reader icon within our e-Store—there's also one on this page. Or you can wait until you've downloaded your e-book (the procedure will point you to our easy Web tutorial). We promise to hold your hand through the entire process and not leave you hanging at the end, wondering how on Earth to find the Reader on your computer!

8. What about viruses while downloading your e-books?
Our e-books are created on a computer using regularly updated VirusShield. However, no website can be responsible for virus protection on your own personal computer. All we can do is point you in the direction of virus protection and strongly advise you never to operate without it. If you do not have protection, please visit this Virus Warnings page for more education: www.webontario.com/virus/viruswarnings.html

9. What is The Word Nerd's refund policy for e-books?
Like other e-book stores, we do not accept returned e-books. Because the merchandise will remain on your hard drive no matter what, there is no real or physical way to return an e-book. Please use the free download in our e-Store to check out our formatting and samples of our fiction before you buy.

10. How do I qualify to become an e-book author in your e-Store?
e-Store authors qualify by using the Fertile Material writing exercises in the book Fear of Writing to produce a collection of short stories, a novel, or a novella (17,500 to 40,000 words). Once you publish your Fertile Material e-book, you qualify for more space in the e-Store. You can use that space to publish your own material, with restrictions (i.e., no pornographic literature, no gratuitous violence, no racist or hate literature, no politics, religion or spirituality, no highly technical material). If you think you qualify, send email to e-books @ fearofwriting.com using the subject line “Qualify for e-Store.”

Twelve Steps to a Hassle-Free Download
. . .
and How to Open Your New E-Book
Print this worksheet so you'll have it with you during the download (click the printer icon above to open the printable page).
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
DOWNLOAD SPEEDS: File size 26.8 MB. Will download fairly quickly with broadband/DSL. At a modem dialup speed of 40 kbps, download will take 60 - 120 mins. You can use your computer for other tasks during that time.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(1) Click on this Adobe icon to go to the download page at Adobe:
![]()
(2) When you get there, click the "Get Adobe Reader" button.
(3) Choose a language (probably English if you're reading this) and the download that's right for your type of computer; e.g. Windows 2000.
(4) Choose a connection: dialup or broadband. (Dial-up means that you manually connect to the Internet; broadband is usually automatic, i.e., it's always connected.)
(5) Put a checkmark in these boxes: Download full version and Do not use Adobe Download Manager. Click red Download button. Disregard the warning about files that may harm your computer (unless you do not trust the source of this download, which is Adobe).
(6) Click Save. A box will pop up asking where you want to save this on your computer. All you have to do is choose a folder. IMPORTANT: Choose a folder you'll be able to find later (e.g. if you always save your stuff in "My Documents" put it there). The .exe file is already named so don't change the file name. Just choose a folder and click Save.
(7) A box on your screen will continually tell you how much longer the download will take. You can minimize this box and do other tasks.
(8) When the download is done, look for the Adobe Reader .exe file (which will be in the folder you saved it in). It will stand out as the file with an icon of a red box containing a white triangle.
(9) Double-click on .exe file. (Note: You may have heard never to click on .exe files, but this advice applies to when you don't know the source of the file—such as in a Spam email.)
(10) An optimizer box will "recompose your data." The Install Wizard will now guide you through the installation. When finished installing, the Install Wizard will ask if you want to restart your computer. Say yes!
(11) After your computer restarts, you'll have a new icon on your desktop (called Adobe Reader 7.0)—an Adobe white triangle on red background. To use your new reader, double click on the icon. Adobe may ask you to activate your free account. Follow their simple instructions.
(12) After the reader opens, click eBooks in the top right hand corner. To open your new e-book, select My Bookshelf. Now click on "Add a File." Add a File lets you browse your folders and open PDF files. When you find your new e-book, double click on it and it will appear in your Adobe bookshelf. Now click the Read button.
