2. Protect Your ID from Identity Theft
During
Email and Internet Situations
As a dedicated online shopper for the past five years, I have had only safe experiences. Personally, I'm more alarmed when I see someone run my credit card in a service station where all 16 digits are displayed on the receipt . . . or in a restaurant where they take your card into a back room to run it (thus giving dishonest employees a chance to burn it with new copying technology).
But many people are still suspicious of online dealings. I believe that if you know how to protect your information, the Internet can be an invaluable resource when used wisely.
Because my new Fear of Writing Website (launched October 2005) offers more than just one book for sale, I've decided to create a page specially devoted to explaining our safe shopping precautions—and also general information how to protect your identity online.
Some of the info from the DMA—and also the information on “phishing”—goes beyond just shopping online with a credit card, so even if you don't use your credit card online you will benefit from this knowledge.
For the ID theft features, we'll start by providing links to trusted sources of information. I plan to build this page over time to include articles that you can read here at my site.
